What's Worth Buying During End-of-Season Sales (and What Isn't)
Some product categories discount meaningfully at the end of a season, while others barely move in price no matter how aggressive the sale signage looks.
End-of-season sale signage tends to treat every category the same way, but the actual discount depth varies enormously depending on how quickly a category needs to clear inventory for the next season.
Outerwear discounts the deepest, and for good reason
Coats and jackets take up significant storage space and tie up capital that retailers need freed up before the next season's inventory arrives, which is why outerwear markdowns often reach fifty to seventy percent by the final weeks of a season. This is consistently one of the best categories to wait for.
Footwear discounts less predictably
Shoe discounts depend heavily on size availability, since popular sizes sell through at full price and only less common sizes remain by the sale period. A genuinely good footwear deal usually means the retailer is clearing a style entirely, not just discounting leftover stock in a few sizes.
Basics rarely discount meaningfully
Plain t-shirts, basic denim, and other wardrobe staples tend to see smaller percentage discounts than seasonal or trend-driven items, since they sell consistently year-round and retailers have less urgency to clear them. Waiting for a basics sale often means waiting for a discount that never gets much deeper than fifteen or twenty percent.
The size of a sale sign has almost no relationship to the size of the actual discount on any individual item.
Seasonal home goods follow the outerwear pattern
Patio furniture, holiday decor, and seasonal bedding tend to discount as deeply as outerwear for the same underlying reason: storage costs and the need to clear space for the next season's inventory. These categories are consistently worth waiting for if the timing allows it.
• Wait for outerwear and seasonal home goods; these categories discount the deepest and most reliably
• Expect shallower discounts on basics and year-round staples regardless of how a sale is marketed
• Check footwear sales for genuinely scarce sizes rather than assuming a deal applies across the board
How to time a purchase around this pattern
Shopping the final two weeks of a sale period, rather than the opening days, usually captures the deepest markdowns in the categories that discount well, since retailers push harder to clear remaining stock as a season's end approaches.
